Darius Jerrell Tarver, affectionately known as “DJ,” was a vibrant young man with a promising future. Born on September 13, 1996, in Dallas, Texas, to Kevin Tarver Sr. and Froncella Reece, Darius was a beacon of light to all who knew him. He was a dedicated student at the University of North Texas (UNT), majoring in criminal justice with aspirations of a career in law enforcement. His commitment to his studies earned him a place on the dean’s list, and he was on track to graduate in the spring of 2020. 

Beyond academics, Darius was deeply involved in his community and faith. He was an active member of the Christian organization, the Light of the World Church, where he participated in various outreach programs. His passion for helping others was evident in his volunteer work and his unwavering dedication to making a positive impact.

In early January 2020, Darius survived a severe car accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. Despite the physical and emotional challenges, he remained resilient, focusing on his recovery and return to normalcy. However, the aftermath of his injury led to a mental health crisis on January 21, 2020. Neighbors, concerned for his well-being, called for assistance. Tragically, the responding officers from the Denton Police Department escalated the situation, leading to Darius being tased and fatally shot. 

The loss of Darius was a devastating blow to his family, friends, and the UNT community. His father, Kevin Tarver, a police department chaplain, has been unwavering in his pursuit of justice for his son. He has called for transparency, accountability, and comprehensive investigations into the actions of the officers involved. In his own words, Kevin stated, “I am pro-police, I’m also pro-justice, and these two are not in conflict with one another. This is about transparency vs. suppression.” 

In honor of Darius’s legacy, the Tarver family established the DJT Justice Network, aiming to advocate for mental health awareness, police reform, and support for families affected by similar tragedies. Through this organization, they strive to turn their pain into purpose, ensuring that Darius’s story serves as a catalyst for meaningful change.

Darius’s life was a testament to compassion, dedication, and resilience. While his time was unjustly cut short, his legacy continues to inspire and drive efforts toward a more just and understanding society.
